Monday Nov 4

In a last ditch effort to try and help, I will ask for an exit ticket for today.

An "Exit Ticket" is a 100 word-ish piece of informal writing on an idea presented to the class, for the English teacher.

I have some similar things in the past, and so the intent of this particular Exit Ticket is to keep my students focussed on the plot and the characters of the novel we are reading.

Here it is:
What I am asking students to write about is how and why the parents - Rex and Rose Mary Wells - manipulate the kids into believing that their lives is a great adventure. For some background you might choose to watch the video above with author being interviewed about this idea. It may help to shake loose some ideas to write about.

I have to ask if you agree with the dad, Rex Wills, at this point. Is this a "great adventure"? Is he helping his kids' education by taking them out to the desert and claiming "this is as real as it gets!"?  Would you want to live this kind of life now or when you were about 8 years old?

What's wrong living like this, anyway? Isn't this just an awesome way to avoid "being normal"?
